I am obsessed with you. And I don’t understand why Kanye ever left you!
Back in February I was checking out flight ticket prices (it’s a regular thing I do) and I found cheap cheap tickets to Chicago. Immediately I texted Rachael and exactly 7 minutes later our flights were booked.
I was so excited to spend a weekend in Chicago. I have always wanted to visit this beautiful city and traveling with friends is flat out fun.
I will admit the start of the trip was a bit rocky. Our flight left Friday at 2PM and we busted our butts making that time work. I scheduled time off and went into work early and Rachael took two French midterms early. Right as we were arriving to the airport I received an email that our flight had been delayed till 7PM that night. Rachael and I were frustrated to say the least. We had plans to catch a comedy show and losing a night in Chicago was not ideal. Plus a 45 minute notice for a 5 hour delay is flat out tacky.
Thankfully we were able to catch a ride into Salt Lake to spend the delay at Rachael’s house instead of the airport. Our flight went well but by the time we finally arrived and checked into our hotel it was 2AM!
Rachael and I woke up early Saturday morning. I mean you’re talking to two girls who were determined to get a full Chicago experience despite our delayed arrival. We started the day off checking out the Navy Pier. From there we caught an Uber to have brunch at The Bongo Room. This place was straight up delicious. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Chicago in the near future. I had the cranberry and orange pancakes topped with vanilla bean syrup.
Following brunch Rachael and I hopped on some city bikes and rode through Millenium park to get to The Art Institute of Chicago. Visiting the museum is something I had been looking forward too. Rachael and I are total art geeks and the art institute has been on our bucket lists. We were dying inside.
From there we walked over to see The Bean. Took some cliché tourist photos of course and then headed over to grab some famous Garrett’s Chicago popcorn mix. After we ducked into the nearest Starbucks and took some time charging our phones (lol) and giving our feet a break from walking.
The rest of the afternoon was spent at the Willis Tower checking out the Sky Deck. My expectations were pretty low but it was actually really cool and seeing the city skyline from above was an amazing view.
For dinner we grabbed Giordano’s deep dish Chicago style pizza. Legit this pizza has changed my life. I now understand the pizza craze. Rachael and I were able to rebook our comedy show tickets to Saturday night and thankfully so! We went to the iO Improv Comedy theatre and honestly have never laughed that hard. The iO is one of the comedy theaters that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey got their start at in Chicago. I so wish that improv comedy was more of a thing here in Utah. Its so great. So so great.
Before catching our flight back to Salt Lake on Sunday morning, Rachael and I grabbed a few donuts from Stan’s. By a few I mean six! The donuts were pretty good but what was even better was our cashier. Lets just say he told us that “today was our fiesta, and everyone was lucky to be on the guest list.” Thank you Stan’s cashier man, thank you.
So here’s to Chicago. I’ll totally think about you now and then (okay maybe every day) and I’m coming home to you again (even though I’m technically from Idaho, Chicago totally felt like home – maybe it was wind?)
P.S. Excuse my pathetic attempts to quote Kayne West’s Homecoming
P.S.S. To soften the blow of our flight being so delayed, Frontier actually gave Rachael and I each $100 credit to any Frontier flight of our choice. Recommendations anyone on where to go next?
